How to dress a rectangle body shape

The rectangle body shape is also called banana or ruler shape because of its straight lines.

Rectangle body shapes are somewhat common and can be seen in many fashion magazines , alot of models have a rectangle body type.  Celebrities like Cameron Diaz, Nicole Ritchie, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Middleton, Uma Thurman, Kate Moss, Anne Hathaway  all have a“boyish” rectangle body shape.

If you have a rectangle body shape you have many choices in  their clothes selection.  A person can wear clothes in layers as their bodies do not have parts that would add unwanted volume.

Signs you have a rectangle shape

  • Your hips and bust are balanced but your waist is not very defined
  • Your waist measures 1′ to 8′ smaller than your bust
  • Your legs are shapely and one of your best assets
  • Your bottom is more flat than round
  • You tend to gain weight in your torso first then upper thighs and arms

The lack of  of an undefined waist and curves can  be balanced out by wearing accessories   and clothes which draws attention to the bust and waist, while moving away from those that create up and down straight lines.

You need to create the illusion of a waist.

  • Keep your silhouette uncluttered
  • Unstructured jackets that gently shape the waist
  • Hip and bottom details are good – as long they create gentle curves

Boat neck, V, U, sweetheart necklines also belted jackets and tops to create a visual V towards your waist. You can also wear embellished, ruffled blouses and shoulder detailing to create curves in your upper body. Off the shoulder tops are good also.

how-to-dress-a rectangle-shape

You have smaller bust and a straight shape so you have to wear tops that create a more feminine silhouette and curves by defining the waist.

Fitted Blazers with shoulder pads to define the waist.

Embellishments or pockets around the shoulders and bust

Tops that are flowy around the bust

  • Vertical patterns as they emphasize the up and down  straight lines
  • Square neck tops
  • Fitted tops

The goal is  for the rectangle shape is to create  a proportional balance between the upper and lower body by adding to  your curves and legs.

Skinny jeans, Tapered trousers, bootleg cuts and capri pants will suit your shape. Look for detailing such as pockets on trousers to create curves and use flowy fabrics (eg summer shorts) to soften your boyish figure

Bottoms with large back pockets.

Low rise and figure hugging jeans.

A – line and pencil skirts will cinch the waist

The rectangle shape should avoid baggy styles, flares that are too wide, and straight skirts.

DRESSES Wrap dresses and Halter tops are good for the rectangle shape. If you have larger breats then you should wear a lower neckline which shows skin and vertically breaks up the chest area

SWIMWEAR:Moderate to full coverage bottoms (light, bright & patterned) and similarly ruffled, padded and push up bikini tops / tankinis.

  • Details at the waist such as noticeable waistband; high-waisted trousers; belted jackets and coats at the front
  • Straight lines from top to toe e.g. straight jacket worn with straight trousers/with pin stripes/with a pencil skirt
  • Boxy jackets or coats as well double breasted coats and jackets; boxy pleats
  • Fussy, busy or droopy style in your clothing
  • Rectangle shaped bags or clutch bags
  • Square toe shoes
  • Vertical patterns as they emphasize the up and down  straight lines
  • Square neck tops
  • Fitted tops

Problem: rectangle body shapes lack curves (chest, waist, hips and bottom) – which may make them look less feminine.

Benefits: rectangle bodies are the easiest type to dress, as most clothes will fit them and most styles will suit them.

Measurements should be taken over yourundergarments. Pull the measuring tape snug, but not too tight, always around the fullest part of each body area and keep the tape parallel to the floor.

Bust—take this measurement over the fullest part of the bust and across the widest part of the back.

Waist—To locate your waistline, tie a narrow string around the waist and let it settle into the natural waistline as you bend. Take the measurement along the stringline.

Hips—Take the measurement around the fullest part, which is usually 7″ to 9″ below the waist.

How to dress an Apple shaped body

The apple shaped figure is also described as V shape or downward triangle because of the ratios of shoulders, waist, hips and legs .

The apple body shape is characterized by broad shoulders, a large bust, narrow hips, slim thighs, a flat rear end and an undefined waistline. Famous females with apple body shapes include Oprah Winfrey,  Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah , Doly Parton , Amber Riley, Kate Upton and Rosie O’Donnell.

Apple shaped women also tend to have slim legs and thighs , whilst the abdomen and chest look larger compared to the rest of the body.

 Characteristics of The Apple Shape

  • Your shoulders are ususually two or more inches wider than your hips.
  • You have a strong upper body.
  • You have average to large bust.
  • Your legs are thin and you have narrow hips.
  • When you gain weight, you gain it above the waist. Weight tends to form on the stomach
  • You carry weight around your mid-section and chest (eg. big bust, protruding stomach). You have no defined waist.
  • Your waistline is undefined or has little waist definition
  • Your hips may be narrow (similar to Inverted Triangle, but your midsection is wider/fuller)

The goal is the define and trim the waist  by creating the illusion of a waist, so  structured garments are suggested because they hold in and disguise the extra weight.

Highlight your cleavage and create nice vertical lines.

You should wear clothes that makes your mid-section / midriff appear smaller narrower. This will help you achieve the look of your body looking  proportional in shape.  Adding volume to your hips, and to your shoulders and neckline, is also suggested.

Wear long open coats and jackets.
Long tops, tunic shirts and  hip length tops also  help to balance out the Apple body shape.

Structured Jackets and Coats Preferably hip-length to skim past your midsection and balance out your frame. Buttons should be below the bust to trim your waist.

apple - shape

If you’re an Apple body shape you’ll look best in structured jackets, nipped waist, V-shaped lapels,  single-breasted jackets and  V-necklines.

V-cut shirts and blouses are a good choice for Apple shaped women.

Avoid wearing high necklines, wide shoulder fitting tops and turtle necks,. Wide shoulder fitting tops will emphasize the shoulders which is not good because you want to draw attention towards the hips, waist and legs.

The best way for Apple shapes to minimize their heavy midriff is to layer whatever top/blouse you are wearing with a structured jacket or coat. This will take attention away from this area and create curves on the right places such as your  chest  and shoulders along with your hips. Wearing your jacket will make the waist appear smaller.

Wear geometric prints to de-emphasize the waist.

Tapered and  skinnys pants  are not suggested on an apple body shaped body , because they’ll accentuate your thin legs and make you look bigger on top. A slight flare  will add   balance  to your body . Wear straight cut pants  with a pair of eye-catching shoes. You can wear skinnys as long as you add knee high boots (that’s because the boots add volume).

Jeans and pants that will bring balance to your top heavy body figure – specifically a hem cut that widens from either your thighs or knee.

Wear styles that add volume to the sides of your hips and around your thighs.

Wear pants that have zippers at the side to avoid adding extra bumps on the front.

Wear straight or flared pants . Avoid pleats.

Wear jeans that are tailored and either straight or flared.

Avoid pleats or ruching on the front of your pants.
Pants with a high rise are good choice.

Pants with some stretch for extra comfort and a good fit are a good choice.

Choose skirts that have their zippers at the side.
Structured pencil skirts work well, but keep them at knee length.
Make sure that any pleats of skirts start below the belly to avoid adding extra volume.

Wear boot leg and flared/wide leg pants and jeans that will bring balance to your top heavy body figure – specifically a hem cut that widens from either your thighs or knee.

Longer Skirt Hems

Right above the knee, knee and calf length skirts. Short skirts will only highlight your midsection .

Your best skirt styles

Structured pencil and A-line skirts

Trumpet skirts

Bias cut

Hanky hems

Short skirts are suggested for petites, but will emphasize your apple shape ,  so you should  more effort in your top by visually elongating your torso with shoulder details. Also you should wear  heels and your skirts right above the knee lengths  if you’re petite.

Apple shaped women should choose a dress with a V cut that makes the neckline longer, and a defined waist line.

apple -shape-v-neck

Wrap-around and one-shoulder dresses are also a great choice

High necklines
Big shapeless garments that don’t show any waist
Bulky trousers with lots of pockets and zippers at the front
Tight clingy T-shirts
Avoid wearing everything in one solid colour. Better to mix colour with a texture
Big puffy jackets .Too much details such as double breasts accentuate your midsection.

How to dress a pear shape body

Pear shaped women are rounder around the waist, upper abdomen, bottom and thighs. While the bust and shoulders are slimmer. Beyoncé, JLO, Ciara,Christina Aguilera,  Skakira, Kelly Clarkson, and Eva Longoria all have pear-shaped bodies. The challenge for Pear shapes is to create a balance between the upper and lower body.

The key to dressing a pear body type is to enhance and add volume (or the illusion of volume) to your upper body while emphasizing your waist and de-emphasizing your lower body to create a balanced, hourglass appearance. Create the most curvaceous effect by mixing and matching separates.

Shapely Signs
You have longer legs and lower body than upper.
You have a smaller bust.
Your hips are slightly wider than your shoulders.
Your upper body is weaker than your lower body.
You experience lower back pain and less flexibility in your legs.
You tend to put on weight in your thighs and legs.

If you are pear shaped you should wear tops and that jackets that will accentuate your slender upper body while also creating a fuller illusion at the right places to achieve that balance with your hips that are larger. V or U necks , padding or embellishments on shoulders, crop tops, horizontal stripes are all good choices.

Pear shaped women should wear pants and skirts that gives the illusion of reducing the lower half by elongation or slimming. Wear darker colors and clean straight lines.

Wide leg pants or straight leg pants or jeans They should also wear A line skirts that are fitted at the hips

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: the hipbone is the line when all tops and jackets should end on a pear shaped figure, because this visually divides your body into two halves, minimizing the lower half. Stay away from any jackets that are too long and do not give you that visual break, they will only make your bottom half look bigger.
Balance is the key to pear shape fashion and a hip-length top or jacket will make it happen!

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: how to wear a pencil skirt. try to balance it out by adding more volume to your upper part with a bright or light-colored blouse and add an extra inch to your shoewear. If you want your hips and legs to appear leaner, go for a pencil skirt with two darts in the front.

Professional Pencil Skirts: Perfect for pear and hourglass figures

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: it’s all about getting the illusion of balance.

1) Empire Waist will emphasize your waist and “slim” down your hips; are best worn right above the knee.

2) A-line; looks like it’s flaring out like an A.

3) Wrapped dresses: creates a ruching to the side of the dress that effectively hides and flatters your hip and tummy area. 4) Shoes; nude color shoes help elongate your legs and adds more height.

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: Wrap dresses are the best way to balance out a larger bottom. Most wrap dresses work beautifully because they have an A-line bottom. Showing a little cleavage will bring the focal point upwards, drawing attention away from your bottom half.

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN:  If you choose to downplay your curves wear  dark wash jeans or black dress pants. Vertical details will slim down the hip-area (pleats, stitches & visible zippers). Tops, sweaters and jackets that extend just below your hipbone helps makes your hip look smaller.

Accentuate your upper body: Necklines stretching horizontally (boat neck, straight, etc.). Bright & bold colors (reds, orange, electric blue, etc.). Details such as stripes, polkadots, sequins, zippers, large collar/lapels, other eye catching embellishments.

Bell & kimono sleeves. Bust-enhancing necklines (bustier & sweetheart). A good push-up bra. Scarves.

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: How To Create Visual Balance between your top & lower half by wearing clothes that make your shoulders look broader.Jackets & tops need to finish above or below the widest point of your hips & bottom

Layering on your top half creates visual interest and draws the eye upwards. Wear volume, clutter, pattern, color on your top half, so hips and thighs will seem narrower. Wear fitted styles around your waist and always accentuate your waistline.

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: Bright on top, dark on bottom. Outfits for pear shaped women are all about balance – unless we decide to show off our curvy hips and derriere. There are many ways to create balance – fabrics, embellishments, color. A bright shirt to makes the top half visually appear wider. The dark trousers are doing the exact opposite: make the lower half look slimmer.

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: The main goal of this type of woman is to emphasize the waistline, which is really small, and broaden the shoulders in order to balance out the proportions of the body.  Wear fitted styles around your waist and always accentuate your waistline e.g. empire line, wraps, fitted lines

For this reason, belts worn on the waist and cap sleeves are always a great solution.

Fashion Tip for Triangle or Pear Shaped Body Types. Draw attention to your upper body & keep the eyes away from your thighs and hips. Wear accessories and designs to draw attention to your upper body. Examples: wear larger necklaces.

To take focus off your hips, wear garments to emphasize your waist, skirts and dresses that are straight or slightly flared: a-line skirt or dress.

Wear low-rise pants that are boot cut or straight leg. Boot cut jeans, fitted at hips and bottom, are the most flattering trouser shapes for pear shape bodies.

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN:  Color blocking swimsuits  are a good choice because by putting the slightly lighter color on top it creates a slim effect.

Also choose a swimsuit with cut leg. This is because if you choose a low cut leg it may be drawing a line across your widest part, thereby creating a center of focus, so go for a higher cut and draw the eye upwards. If you’re pear-shaped, an asymmetrical cut flatters.

Bathing suits. For extra coverage on the thigh, look for a clean-skirted bottom, a feminine look that offers more coverage. To flatter thighs, a skirted bottom should fall just below the largest part of the upper leg. A plunging neckline or eye-catching top draws the eye upward, minimizing the bottom.

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: coats should be tight in the waistline with a belt, with padded shoulders for those that are very little

pear -shape

The short jackets must cover half of the hip & hug the waist; even for the down jackets, it’s better to avoid the shorter ones. Choose warm fabrics but not the thick ones. Make your shoulders look broader with e.g. shoulder pads, puffed sleeves, cap sleeve t-shirts, boleros

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: If you must wear skinny jeans do not wear low-rise skinny jeans. Do not let your shirts fall to your hips. You want at least a mid-rise. Tuck in your shirts or wear cropped shirts. If you’re wearing skinny jeans and the bottom of your skirt is sitting across your hips that will make your hips look extra wide.

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: Pair V-neck blouses with wide-leg pants or an A-line skirt to create an hourglass shape.

Choose jackets that are fitted through the bust and waist but gently flare over hips.

The hipbone is the line when all tops and jackets should end on a pear shaped figure, because this visually divides your body into two halves, minimizing the lower half.

Stay away from any jackets that are too long and do not give you that visual break, they will only make your bottom half look bigger.
PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: make sure is that the dress/skirt has structure (in other words, its not a loosy flowy fabric. It must maintain its shape on its own) and that the skirt/dress goes straight down after the widest part of your hips.

PEAR SHAPED WOMEN: Always wear something darker & slimming on the bottom (dark jeans, slacks, knee-length pencil skirt, or A-line skirt). You don’t always have to wear black on the bottom, but make sure that the bottom is solid in color & darker than what you have on top.

pear -shape-body

Direct attention to your tops: fun colors, prints, or details at the neck all serve the purpose of drawing the eye away from the hip area. Make sure your tops don’t end at your hips because it draws unnecessary attention there.

Details, belts on hips, patterns, pockets on thigh or hip area

Pleats or creases in your leg line, wide or flared leg lines, Culotes or cropped trousers pinstripe suits, Narrowing leg.

Flared or ruffled sleeve lines, straight skirts or pencil skirt

Dropped waistlines or dropped panels

Ankle straps, kitten heels, delicate footwear, round toe shoes, ankle boots with straps around your calf area.

Bags that sit on your hips

Different waistlines

Different waistline styles in women dressing is known to enhance the positive features of a particular body type which will make for an elegant look in you. You can wear dresses for informal as well as formal events and hence you need to select the right choice to look at the topmost of the beauties present in the party.

Natural Waistline is a style wherein the line of the waist definition falls beneath the belly button and has a natural depiction at the waist part of your body. This kind of style is an excellent choice if you have an hourglass figure. However if you have a n apple shaped body then you should not go for this one as it will just not suit the wide waist look you have in the frame rather than the hip.

The narrowest part of the body between the ribs and the hips is where the natural waist hits. A Natural Waistline creates balance. This waistline is great for those who have a natural hourglass figure. Those who are apple-shaped (the waist is wider than the hips) should avoid this waistline; it will only serve to accent the thickness of the waist.

Empire Waistline has a bodice design where in the style begins from underneath the chest region in women. This has a higher fit of the waistline which enhances the flow of the body figure eminently for the ones having short height. This dress waistline type will make you seem taller.

If you have smaller bust then you can have this pattern as your upper torso will look much healthier. Thick waist people will also benefit from it due to the free flowing pattern of the skirt the dresses of such kind have.

Basque Waistline Style forms a figure shape of U or V just below the natural waistline for almost two to three inches. You will look more slender in this type of dress as the hips and the waist look much more in balance with each other due to the elongation illusion the waistline type creates.

It is not advisable however for women who have pear shaped body as this style might draw more attention to the lower side of the belly which will be disadvantaged in such body frame. Women who have squarer frame should also not opt for this waistline dress.

Dropped Waistline Style is the one wherein the dresses have this definition below the natural waistline for almost three to five inches. It lingers and originates mostly around or at the hips. This category dresses will naturally make your midsection look longer. Therefore these are good for women who have slim figure as it will create a look of hourglass body frame.

This style is also an excellent choice for women who have wide hips and fuller body at upper torso with short waist. However if you are the one who has heighted frame then you should not adopt these kind of dresses from the risk of making your legs shorter and the midsection appear much more elongated than necessary.

Asymmetrical Waistline Style has a diagonal expression by originating at the point of the natural waistline and extending in a slant way to the point of drooped waistline. Women who have a full figure will look gorgeous in this kind of dress. However if you have short height, you should not opt for this waistline style as this will just make you appear shorter.
