Adopting a Zero-Waste Beauty Routine: What You Need to Know

From natural remedies to hundred-dollar beauty products, each of us has our way of feeling like a beauty queen. Regardless of the type of products you use, have you ever considered following a zero-waste beauty routine? Thanks to our raised level of awareness, many people have started realizing how simple little things can make a big difference in the world. However, while most of us take good care of limiting single-use plastics and separating our trash, we rarely think about how our beauty routine falls into the equation.

In case it’s your first time hearing the term, this is what a zero-waste beauty routine is all about.

What is Zero-Waste Beauty?

Zero-waste beauty is a relatively new term, also referred to as clean beauty, green beauty, and eco-friendly beauty. To understand where this movement originated from, let’s take a quick look through the beauty and cosmetics industry stats.

According to a research published in Forbes magazine, more than 120 billion units of packaging, mostly plastic, are produced by the global cosmetics industry, with 70% of this plastic tossed as trash in the landfills. Moreover, we lose 18 million acres of forest each year to the process. We’re not even talking about the volatile organic compounds (VOC) that increase air pollution or the discarded makeup wipes. Don’t even get us started on the rest of the accessories.

This predicament gave rise to an eco-friendly movement that raises awareness about how our regular beauty routines are detrimental to the environment. As a result, we came up with zero-waste beauty, a routine where you get to feel like a queen in both body and soul.

How to Adopt a Zero-Waste Beauty Routine

Unfortunately, turning to zero-waste beauty is not as easy as it sounds. It’s going to demand some effort on your part, but here’s how you can get started.

1. Use Fewer Amounts

You may be used to fixing your makeup every couple of hours, but is that absolutely necessary? If you think about it, most of the time, your makeup is already on point. It doesn’t need any fixing; we’re merely used to the habit. The next time you find yourself itching to fix your already perfect makeup, remind yourself of the zero-waste routine. On a different note, how many of us buy products we don’t need? If you don’t need it, then you probably shouldn’t get it. On the plus side, you’ll be relieving your skin from these harmful chemicals and saving on money at the same time.

2. Avoid Single-Use Products

There are multiple single-use products that we discard mindlessly, even though we can easily find much more efficient alternatives. Think about all the makeup wipes, cotton swabs, exfoliating pads, and sheet masks. Instead, look for a sustainable solution that’s easy to clean and re-usable. Again, think of the money you’ll save in the process!

3. Check the Ingredients

How often do you check the ingredient list on a makeup product before you purchase it? Have you ever even done it before? It’s shameful to admit that most of us rarely do, but we can always start somewhere. You’ll want to check the ingredients for any micro-plastic products that may be included in the makeup, but that may be tricky unless you know what names to look for. While you’ll rarely find the word “plastic,” you may encounter other synonyms like microbeads, microspheres, or copolymers.

4. Look into Packaging and Shipping

Perhaps the most obvious form of plastics to identify in a zero-waste beauty routine is the packaging. After all, we know what to look for. Unfortunately, the amount of waste that’s packed into the packing of most beauty products is appalling. As a rule of thumb, the best option is to avoid packaging altogether, which you can control if you’re shopping in person. If you’re used to ordering your makeup online, make sure to check their packaging and shipping options, or contact customer service representatives to inquire about zero-waste options if their website isn’t clear on where they stand.

5. Recycle, Refill, or Reuse

What happens to the products’ containers once you’ve used up the makeup? Normally, we just throw them away, but you should start having second thoughts. Unless you’re sure that the container is completely environmentally-friendly, explore alternate options. Many cosmetics brands have started providing makeup without waste and adding the option of refilling your empty containers once they run out. Check with your makeup supplier for this type of option; it’s definitely the most beneficial of all. In case they don’t offer refilling services, consider another use for the container instead of discarding it.

6. Don’t Waste Any Products

By this point, you may be utterly tempted to throw all your current makeup away – but don’t, not yet. You’ve already invested in this makeup, so use it to the fullest until it runs out, after which you can explore eco-friendly options to dispose of it safely.

7. Look for Natural Alternatives

There’s a reason why many women have started advocating for natural beauty. While natural beauty normally steers clear from chemical makeup products, it still involves using natural remedies to get similar beauty results. If you’re able to switch your whole makeup routine to depend on easily available natural products that don’t involve any waste, then you should definitely do it. Remember to avoid any natural oils or products that are wrapped or stored in plastic containers.

On a completely different note, investing in natural products is much safer and healthier for you. Remember all the microplastics usually added to cosmetics? It’s not uncommon to also add petroleum compounds. These compounds are derived from plastic, and although they don’t directly result in waste, they’re harmful chemicals absorbed by none other than your skin. These products have been linked to serious diseases, the most dangerous of which is cancer.

Are you still having second thoughts about the zero-beauty routine? Then perhaps consider all the benefits you’ll gain. In addition to becoming more environmentally aware and leaving a positive impact on our planet, you’ll be repaid with saving on time, money, and health hazards. If you ask us, it’s a winning situation for everyone.

Alicia Keys Is Launching a Skin Care Brand with E.l.f.

Alicia Keys  is collaborating with drugstore beauty favorite E.l.f to create a lifestyle beauty brand focused on wellness and self-care. The collection of skincare and wellness products will be cruelty-free.

Keys  new lifestyle beauty brand will enable Alicia to further explore conversations about inner beauty, wellness and connection,” notes the press release. “With an inclusive point of view, an authentic voice, and a line of skin-loving, dermatologist-developed, cruelty-free products, the brand aims to bring new meaning to beauty by honoring ritual in our daily life and practicing intention in every action.”

Last year, Keys showed off her nighttime skin care routine on her Youtube page, including her favorite face washtoner, and blemish serum. “My face is very prone to breakouts, so I am a fanatic about my face wash. I can’t just use everything I can’t just use anything,” she says. She also gave tips and tricks for using rose water, massaging your face, and how to unwind at the end of a long day.

Back in 2016, the musician and best-selling author penned a letter explaining why she was embracing a makeup-free lifestyle. “Every time I left the house, I would be worried if I didn’t put on makeup: What if someone wanted a picture?? What if they POSTED it??? These were the insecure, superficial, but honest thoughts I was thinking. And all of it, one way or another, was based too much on what other people thought of me,” she wrote. Keys continued: “‘Cause I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing.”

Keys aims to normalize the choice to wear (or not wear) makeup in public. “I’m not a slave to makeup. I’m not a slave to not wearing makeup either. I get to choose at [any] given moment. That’s my right,” she told Allure back in February 2017. Keys is often photographed at events wearing light touches of makeup—brows, concealer, light lashes—with a focus on fresh skin.

All that’s to say Keys knows her way around skincare products and how wellness and self-care can result in an insane glow. “Alicia gets regular facials, does acupuncture and she eats healthy and exercises,” Dotti, Keys’s go-to makeup artist, told in October 2016. “She knows you have to invest internally for your skin to look great externally. It’s also about how you process your energy. She comes from a very strong place and she comes from a very kind place. That in itself is super important. But it’s about the choices she’s making and the products she’s using. It’s the work of a good team.”

We look forward to seeing how Keys translates all she’s learned about healthy skin into drugstore skincare products available to all. We’ll update this story when we know more about the products, prices, and launch date for Alicia Keys’s collaboration with E.l.f. beauty.

How to Create And Wear Glossy Eyelids

A popular makeup trend on the fashion runways are glossy eyelids here are tips on how to create the look .

Prepping the Lids

  1. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 1

Apply a light shadow. Before you add any gloss, you can create a beautiful effect by first applying a soft, shimmery glow to your lids. Anything with soft sheen looks wonderful, such as a pearl-colored shadow or highlight. You can apply it softly with a shadow brush, or simply dab a bit on with your fingertips.

    • While any kind of shadow works, a liquid, gel, or cream shadow will give your eyes a wetter, glossier look.
  2. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 2

Line the top lash line. A black liquid liner is perfect for this. By using liquid eyeliner, you can create a thin, precise line that will define your lashes. It’s important to keep this line thin and as close to your lashes as possible, so that you reduce potential smudging once you add the gloss. If you want, you can certainly add a wing.[3]

    • This is the only stark, precise line you’ll create. You want to line your eye simply to emphasize your lashes and make them look fuller and darker. You’ll be covering this line later, though, so it’s okay if it’s not perfect. It’s simply the foundation.
  3. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 3

Dab the eyeliner with a pencil liner. Once you’ve created that original precise line, you can loosen up. Now, your makeup application will be a bit messier and more sultry. Using a kohl pencil, go back over the liquid eyeliner. You don’t need to create a perfect line – in fact, you don’t want to. The kohl pencil will be smudged and blended with the gloss, so just dab it along your lash line however you want.

    • Once you add the gloss, you can always go back in and add more eyeliner as you see fit.

Applying the Gloss

  1. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 4
Add some shine. There are a few different products you can choose from to add a bit of shine and start blending your eyeliner. Note that this isn’t the actual gloss, but will add a bit of luster to get you started. For this, you want to use a wax-based product that isn’t overly sticky. A wax-based product like MAC’s Mixing Medium Shine is ideal. If you don’t want to shell out the cash for a designer product, you can use some waxy lip balm to create the same effect.
    • If you’re trying this look out for the first time, it might be wise to save the cash and try creating it with cheaper products. If you love the look and want to wear it often, however, it’s worth investing in the longer-lasting products that are created specifically for the eyes.
  2. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 5

Use the product to soften and blend the eyeliner. Whether you’re using the MAC product or a bit of balm, you’ll apply it the same way. Get a bit of the product on your fingertip and press it onto your eyelid. Using a light hand, carefully use the product to smudge out the kohl eyeliner you previously applied. Gently pull the eyeliner up the lid to create a softer, smokier effect.

    • If you want your lash line to be darkest, you can certainly add a bit more eyeliner to your lash line after you’ve smudged it out a bit. Remember, though, that this look really isn’t about precision or stark lines.
  3. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 6
Finish with your gloss. Finally, after you’ve blended your eyeliner and laid a shiny foundation, it’s time to apply your gloss. There are a few different eye glosses on the market, like MAC Eye Gloss, NYX Lid Lacquer, MAKE Face Gloss, and Glossier Balm Dotcom. You can find a variety of glosses online or at your local beauty supply store. Use a flat brush or your finger to apply the gloss over your entire lid. Start in the middle and carefully sweep it outwards.
    • If you’re worried about your eyelids feeling sticky, avoid applying any product to the crease. Smooth the product to your lid below the crease and a bit above the crease, but don’t put any directly in it!
    • If you don’t want to buy a product meant specifically for your eye, you can always use a clear lip gloss or Vaseline-type product instead

Completing the Look

  1. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 7
Apply a bit of highlight to your face. The defining characteristics of this look are dewy and glowing. By adding a bit of highlight to a few key places on your face, you’ll up the glow factor even more. Dust a bit right below your eyebrows, along your brow bone. Then, sweep a bit down the bridge of your nose, on the highest point of your cheekbones, and on your cupid’s bow.
  2. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 8
Use a transparent or nude lip product. Glossy eyelids are perfect for a fresh-faced, semi-natural look. That being said, they are best paired with a soft, more natural lip color. You can simply roll on a bit of lip balm to keep your lips looking plump and moisturized, or add a bit of nude lipstick if you prefer wearing a heavier product. Whatever you choose to do, let your glossy lids be the star of the show.
  3. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 9
Fill in your eyebrows. You don’t need crisp, perfectly manicured brows for this look. In fact, natural brows pair perfectly with this effortless, light look. However, natural brows can always be improved upon! Using an eyebrow pencil, powder, or pomade, lightly fill in any areas where your brows are sparse or thin. Use a spoolie to brush your brows out so that everything looks natural and soft.
  4. Image titled Create Glossy Eyelids Step 10
Bring your gloss with you for touch-ups. Because this is a glossy, wetter look, you’re bound to have some inevitable movement. Most of the natural smudging is great – you don’t want your eyeliner to be perfectly clean and crisp. However, you also don’t want any smudges on your cheek or near your temple! Bring a little mirror and some extra gloss with you when you’re heading out the door. That way, you can fix any wayward smudges and reapply gloss to keep your lids shimmering all day and night.
