The apple shaped figure is also described as V shape or downward triangle because of the ratios of shoulders, waist, hips and legs .

The apple body shape is characterized by broad shoulders, a large bust, narrow hips, slim thighs, a flat rear end and an undefined waistline. Famous females with apple body shapes include Oprah Winfrey,  Catherine Zeta-Jones, Queen Latifah , Doly Parton , Amber Riley, Kate Upton and Rosie O’Donnell.


Apple shaped women also tend to have slim legs and thighs , whilst the abdomen and chest look larger compared to the rest of the body.


 Characteristics of The Apple Shape

  • Your shoulders are ususually two or more inches wider than your hips.
  • You have a strong upper body.
  • You have average to large bust.
  • Your legs are thin and you have narrow hips.
  • When you gain weight, you gain it above the waist. Weight tends to form on the stomach
  • You carry weight around your mid-section and chest (eg. big bust, protruding stomach). You have no defined waist.
  • Your waistline is undefined or has little waist definition
  • Your hips may be narrow (similar to Inverted Triangle, but your midsection is wider/fuller)


The goal is the define and trim the waist  by creating the illusion of a waist, so  structured garments are suggested because they hold in and disguise the extra weight.


Highlight your cleavage and create nice vertical lines.


You should wear clothes that makes your mid-section / midriff appear smaller narrower. This will help you achieve the look of your body looking  proportional in shape.  Adding volume to your hips, and to your shoulders and neckline, is also suggested.


Wear long open coats and jackets.
Long tops, tunic shirts and  hip length tops also  help to balance out the Apple body shape.

Structured Jackets and Coats Preferably hip-length to skim past your midsection and balance out your frame. Buttons should be below the bust to trim your waist.

If you’re an Apple body shape you’ll look best in structured jackets, nipped waist, V-shaped lapels,  single-breasted jackets and  V-necklines.


V-cut shirts and blouses are a good choice for Apple shaped women.

Avoid wearing high necklines, wide shoulder fitting tops and turtle necks,. Wide shoulder fitting tops will emphasize the shoulders which is not good because you want to draw attention towards the hips, waist and legs.

The best way for Apple shapes to minimize their heavy midriff is to layer whatever top/blouse you are wearing with a structured jacket or coat. This will take attention away from this area and create curves on the right places such as your  chest  and shoulders along with your hips. Wearing your jacket will make the waist appear smaller.

Tapered and  skinnys pants  are not suggested on an apple body shaped body , because they’ll accentuate your thin legs and make you look bigger on top. A slight flare  will add   balance  to your body . Wear straight cut pants  with a pair of eye-catching shoes. You can wear skinnys as long as you add knee high boots (that’s because the boots add volume).


Jeans and pants that will bring balance to your top heavy body figure – specifically a hem cut that widens from either your thighs or knee.

Wear styles that add volume to the sides of your hips and around your thighs.

Wear pants that have zippers at the side to avoid adding extra bumps on the front.

Wear straight or flared pants . Avoid pleats.


Wear jeans that are tailored and either straight or flared.


Avoid pleats or ruching on the front of your pants.
Pants with a high rise are good choice.

Pants with some stretch for extra comfort and a good fit are a good choice.

Choose skirts that have their zippers at the side.
Structured pencil skirts work well, but keep them at knee length.
Make sure that any pleats of skirts start below the belly to avoid adding extra volume.



Wear boot leg and flared/wide leg pants and jeans that will bring balance to your top heavy body figure – specifically a hem cut that widens from either your thighs or knee.

Apple shaped women should choose a dress with a V cut that makes the neckline longer, and a defined waist line.
