The Roots Rock Style Exhibition is an art and fashion presentation created by the Reggae Arts & Culture Foundation Inc. for The Reggae Museum. Presented during Reggae Month and Reggae Fashion Week, the exhibition explored how reggae’s cultural identity has been expressed through clothing, visual art, music, photography and personal style.
More than a fashion presentation, Roots Rock Style documented the powerful relationship between reggae music and the visual language surrounding it. Where Reggae Art and Fashion Meet
From its earliest years in Jamaica, reggae developed a distinctive visual identity. The clothing worn by artists, musicians, selectors, dancers and members of the reggae community helped express the messages carried in the music.
Military-inspired jackets, African prints, handcrafted garments, denim, leather, crochet, red-gold-and-green color combinations and Rastafarian symbolism became part of reggae’s recognizable cultural language. These elements were never simply trends. They reflected heritage, political consciousness, spiritual beliefs and connections to Africa and the wider Caribbean.
The Roots Rock Style Exhibition brought these influences together through an immersive combination of art and fashion. Garments, styled mannequins, photographs, cultural references and exhibition storytelling demonstrated how reggae style developed alongside the music and helped shape its international image.
Presented During Reggae Month
The exhibition was presented during Reggae Month, a period dedicated to celebrating reggae’s history, pioneers, achievements and global influence.
By presenting Roots Rock Style during Reggae Month, the Reggae Arts & Culture Foundation Inc. expanded the celebration beyond music. The exhibition showed that reggae is also a visual and creative culture expressed through fashion, art, dance, photography, language and community traditions.
The presentation invited audiences to experience reggae history through what people wore, how artists presented themselves and how Jamaican creativity influenced generations around the world.
Roots Rock Style and Reggae Fashion Week
Roots Rock Style was also presented as part of Reggae Fashion Week, an initiative connecting reggae’s musical legacy with fashion design and cultural storytelling.
Reggae Fashion Week provided a platform for examining how designers and artists interpret reggae culture through clothing. It highlighted the connection between Jamaica’s creative industries and the international influence of reggae-inspired fashion.
Within this context, the Roots Rock Style Exhibition functioned as both an artistic presentation and a cultural archive. It honored the past while encouraging new designers, stylists, photographers and cultural creators to develop contemporary interpretations of reggae style.
Preserving Reggae’s Visual History
The exhibition supported the mission of The Reggae Museum to document, preserve and interpret reggae history while connecting its Jamaican foundations to its continuing global influence.
Much of reggae’s visual history exists in stage clothing, album artwork, concert photographs, posters, hairstyles, jewelry and personal collections. These materials help tell stories that cannot be preserved through sound recordings alone.
