Prince Harry returned to the spotlight in New York City on Thursday, July 16, making an unexpected appearance at the inaugural TIME100 Sports Gala just days after a significant family reunion in England.
The Duke of Sussex arrived at the star-studded Manhattan event dressed in a sleek black suit paired with a crisp, open-collar white shirt. The polished but relaxed look offered a modern alternative to traditional black-tie dressing, allowing Harry to appear sophisticated without looking overly formal. Meghan Markle did not accompany him on the red carpet.
As he posed for photographs, the 41-year-old royal appeared relaxed and in good spirits. He even playfully described the event’s photographers as the “most polite” he had ever encountered, bringing a lighthearted moment to his surprise arrival.
Prince Harry Honored for the Invictus Games
Harry attended the gala after being selected for TIME’s 2026 list of the 100 Most Influential People in Sports. He was recognized for founding the Invictus Games, the international adaptive-sports competition created for wounded, injured and sick military service members and veterans.
The Duke of Sussex served in the British Army for 10 years and completed two tours in Afghanistan. His idea for the Invictus Games developed after he attended the Warrior Games in Colorado Springs in 2013 and witnessed how adaptive sports could help injured service members rebuild their confidence, identity and sense of purpose.
The first Invictus Games were staged in London in 2014, bringing together more than 400 competitors from 13 countries. The movement has since expanded internationally, with events held in Orlando, Toronto, Sydney, The Hague, Düsseldorf and Vancouver-Whistler. Birmingham, England, will host the next Games in 2027.
During the TIME100 Sports Gala, Harry delivered a toast centered on the restorative power of athletics. He explained that sports can do far more than create champions, describing competition as a force capable of restoring confidence, strengthening families and helping people believe in their futures again.
He also acknowledged Invictus competitors attending the gala and celebrated their resilience, leadership and continued commitment to their communities. Harry’s speech emphasized that the true impact of sports is not always found on a scoreboard, but in the person an athlete becomes through the experience.
Other honorees delivering toasts during the evening included basketball stars LeBron James and Jalen Brunson, Olympic figure skater Alysa Liu and retired American soccer champion Alex Morgan. Harry was also photographed speaking with Liu and Olympic ice dancer Madison Chock and posing with Brunson during the celebration.
The Appearance Followed an Important Royal Reunion
Harry’s New York appearance came less than a week after his reported private reunion with King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House in Gloucestershire on July 10.
Meghan and the couple’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, were also reportedly present. The gathering marked the King’s first in-person meeting with his Sussex grandchildren in approximately four years and represented a potentially meaningful step in Harry’s efforts to rebuild his relationship with his father.
