Teyana Taylor Gets Emotional Accepting BET’s 2026 Icon of the Year Award: “I Worked My Ass Off 20 Years”
Teyana Taylor had one of the most emotional and defining moments of the 2026 BET Awards when she accepted the Icon of the Year Award from her longtime inspiration, Janet Jackson.
Taking the stage at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Taylor visibly fought back tears as she took in the magnitude of the honor. The multihyphenate star—known for her work across music, film, fashion, directing, choreography and culture—used the moment to reflect on the determination behind her journey.
“Tonight they handed me a title, and that title is Icon of the Year,” Taylor said. “For a little minute, I wondered if I was supposed to feel uncomfortable saying that title out loud, but no, I worked my ass off 20 years for this.”
Her words immediately became one of the most powerful moments of the night.
Taylor made it clear that accepting the title was not about ego. “I’m not accepting what I’ve earned with arrogance,” she said. “I’m accepting what I’ve earned with gratitude.”
The Harlem-born creative has built a career defined by fearless reinvention. From her early days in music to becoming a respected director, choreographer, actress, producer and undeniable fashion force, Taylor has continued to create on her own terms while expanding what success can look like for a modern entertainer.
During her speech, she spoke about the importance of helping others rise while pursuing her own dreams.
“Most of my career has been spent building my own dream while helping somebody else build theirs,” Taylor shared. “Because I believe there’s room for all of us to win.”
She also delivered a powerful message about legacy, explaining that greatness is not measured by how many people stand beneath you, but by how many people stand beside you because you were willing to reach back.
“That’s the only legacy I care about,” she said.
Taylor then dedicated a deeply personal message to her daughters, telling them that while the world may see her as an icon, she hopes they will always see her simply as home.
The Icon of the Year honor crowned an extraordinary evening for Taylor, who also took home awards for Best Actress, Fashion Vanguard Award and Video Director of the Year for her visual project Escape Room.
For an artist who has spent two decades turning vision into reality, Teyana Taylor’s BET Awards moment was more than a trophy presentation. It was a celebration of resilience, originality, creative ownership and a legacy still being written.
And as Taylor said herself, she will wear the title loud and proud.
