New York Knicks star OG Anunoby is proving that some of the biggest wins happen far beyond the basketball court.
Known for his calm presence, elite defense, and clutch play, Anunoby is now using his platform to shine a spotlight on a cause close to his heart: helping shelter cats find loving homes. The Knicks standout partnered with Animal Care Centers of NYC, Royal Canin, and VCA Animal Hospitals to introduce “OG’s Starting Five,” a special roster of five adoptable cats selected by Anunoby himself.
The feline lineup included Penne, Sammy, Roxie, Damu, and Lil Leo—each with a personality as memorable as a player on a championship roster. From lap-cat cuddles to playful energy and quiet companionship, the cats were featured to encourage New Yorkers and animal lovers everywhere to consider adoption.
The initiative quickly made an impact. Within days, three of OG’s Starting Five had reportedly found homes, including Damu, an 11-year-old tuxedo cat with medical needs. His adoption showed the powerful difference visibility can make for older pets and animals who may otherwise be overlooked in a crowded shelter system.
Animal Care Centers of NYC, the city’s largest animal-shelter organization, welcomed the attention generated by Anunoby’s involvement. His campaign did more than draw eyes to five individual cats—it encouraged potential adopters to visit shelters, learn about rescue animals, and discover the many cats waiting for their own second chance.
For the lucky adopters of the Starting Five, the support extended beyond the adoption day. The campaign included a year of cat food from Royal Canin and a year of complimentary veterinary exams from VCA Animal Hospitals, helping give each cat a healthy and comfortable beginning in its new home.
At a time when NBA stars are often celebrated for their on-court accomplishments, Anunoby’s compassionate move is a reminder that influence can create meaningful change. By turning a simple “Starting Five” concept into an adoption campaign, he gave shelter cats the kind of attention every animal deserves.
OG Anunoby may be a star at Madison Square Garden, but for New York City’s rescue cats, he is becoming something even more special: a true teammate in the search for forever homes.
