Responding to an Unprecedented Storm
On Oct. 28—nearly 40 years after Hurricane Gilbert—Hurricane Melissa became the strongest storm to strike Jamaica in the island’s history. According to the Associated Press, the hurricane claimed the lives of at least 45 people in Jamaica alone, leaving widespread devastation in its wake.
The scale of the disaster galvanized Jamaica’s most influential artists, many of whom immediately mobilized to support relief efforts and bring global attention to the urgent needs of their homeland.
More Benefit Concerts Ahead
Friday’s Jamaica Strong concert will be followed by a second, separate benefit event: the ‘Nice Up Jamaica’ Hurricane Relief Concert, led by Yellowman and Johnny Osbourne, scheduled for Dec. 16.
Together, these events underscore the power of music, culture, and community in times of crisis—transforming the global stage into a platform for hope, healing, and action for Jamaica.
