After days of grieving, Diane Keaton’s family has revealed pneumonia to be the cause of the legendary performer’s death. It was announced on Saturday, Oct. 11 that Keaton died at the age of 79 in her California home, though no cause of death was given at the time.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” her family said in a statement to People.
An immense outpouring of support and appreciation followed the news of Keaton’s death, with many swarming to praise the iconic actress. AMC Theaters announced Monday that it would pay tribute to the late Oscar winner by rereleasing both “Annie Hall” and “Something’s Gotta Give.” Keaton earned a Best Actress nomination for both roles, with “Annie Hall” marking her first and only win.
“As a filmmaker, I’ve lost a connection with an actress that one can only dream of,” “Something’s Gotta Give” writer/director Nancy Meyers said in a statement. “We all search for that someone who really gets us, right? Well, with Diane, I believe we mutually had that. I always felt she really got me so writing for her made me better because I felt so secure in her hands. I knew how vulnerable she could be. And I knew how hilarious she could be, not only with dialogue (which she said word for word as written but managed to always make it sound improvised) but she could be funny sitting at a dinner table or just walking into a room.”
Keaton led a wide array of acclaimed films throughout her career. She took home two more nominations for Best Actress in between “Annie Hall” and “Something’s Gotta Give”: one for 1981’s “Reds,” the other for 1996’s “Marvin’s Room.” She also starred in hit features like “The Godfather” trilogy, “Looking for Mr. Goodbar,” “Manhattan,” “Baby Boom,” “Father of the Bride,” “The Family Stone” and many more.

In a statement to People, the Oscar-winning actress’s family said she died of pneumonia.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” reads the statement.
The Oscar winner’s death was also first reported by People, though details were scant at the time; family revealed only that she died in California.
In addition to today’s statement, Keaton’s family also offered fans and friends a way to pay tribute.
“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”
