Rest peacefully, Ananda Lewis — a radiant force whose legacy lives on.
Ananda was more than a television personality; she was a voice, a movement, and a guiding light for a generation. She became a cultural icon in the ’90s and early 2000s, one of the original “it girls” we looked up to on our screens. With her signature intelligence, poise, and authenticity, she helped shape the way young people—especially teens—saw themselves and the world around them.
From her early days hosting BET’s Teen Summit, Ananda used her platform to speak directly to youth, fearlessly addressing the real issues affecting their lives—mental health, relationships, education, and identity. She wasn’t just a host—she was a big sister figure to many, making space for honest dialogue at a time when few others were. Her impact was immeasurable, empowering countless young voices and minds.
An alumna of Howard University, she graduated cum laude in 1995 with a degree in history. Even as a student, her presence was magnetic—featured in Shai’s “Baby, I’m Yours” video filmed right on campus in 1993. Before that, she attended San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts, already showing signs of her lifelong dedication to creativity and social good.
After Teen Summit, she became a beloved MTV VJ, hosting shows like TRL, MTV Live, Hot Zone, and MTV Jams, bringing her grounded and fearless energy to pop culture at its peak. Yet, she never lost sight of her mission—to uplift and connect with people on a deeper level.
In 2001, she launched The Ananda Lewis Show, stepping into the daytime talk space with her signature compassion and truth-telling. Even as the show lasted just one season, it reflected her continual push to use media for meaningful connection. She later joined The Insider as chief correspondent and eventually found a new passion—becoming a skilled carpenter.
Ananda Lewis passed away on June 11, 2025, at age 52, after a brave battle with breast cancer. But her light, her strength, and the way she made so many of us feel seen—that will never fade.
Rest in power, Ananda.
You changed the culture. You changed us.
Thank you for showing a generation how to stand tall, speak truth, and live authentically.
