Another day at the 2025 box office has passed, and Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners continues to make its impressive fanged-mark. Across the most recent domestic weekend, the critically acclaimed vampire horror thriller took home another $22.1 million from 3,502 nationwide theaters, making for a per-theater average of $6,311. Added to the movie’s already impressive box office haul, Sinners has accumulated an eye-watering $283.4 million globally, split between $215.4 million domestically and $68 million in overseas markets.
Thanks to this total, taken from just four weeks so far, Sinners is teetering on the edge of perhaps its most impressive box office achievement yet, namely entering the 15 highest-grossing horror movies ever at the global box office. For a non-franchise project in a genre bursting at the seams with reboots and sequels, this is quite some feat, and one the film should achieve by the end of the coming weekend with just $12 million separating it and the currently 15th-placed movie, Resident Evil: Afterlife. In fact, with Sinners showing no signs of slowing down at the box office, having recently opened in its largest number of US theaters yet, there is every chance the movie will enter the top 10 before long, with another $31 million required to do so.
Not just a financial success, Sinners is also a dominant force in the court of both critical and public opinion. Boasting a near-perfect 97% from critics on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, supported by a 96% audience score, Sinners is one of the highest-rated movies of 2025 so far, as well as the year’s fifth-highest-grossing. The ability for the film to challenge and even outperform the likes of A Minecraft Movie and the Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal-starring The Accountant 2 is no small feat, and will likely restore faith in those who had lost trust in the 2025 box office.
What is the Highest-Grossing Horror Movie of All Time?
Sinners‘ success is indicative of a genre that proves timelessly desirable for audiences. However, despite such incredible financial triumph, it’s unlikely the movie will ever make enough to threaten the top 5 in the aforementioned list of highest-grossing horror movies. So, which hair-raising flicks are the crème de la crème of the horror box office? In fifth place, 2018’s The Nun made $362 million worldwide, almost $100 million more than Sinners‘ current total. 1973’s The Exorcist remarkably sits in fourth place on $428 million, despite this not being adjusted for inflation. 2019’s It: Chapter Two holds third place with a grand total of $467 million, with 1975’s Jaws, widely considered the pioneer of the summer blockbuster, in second with $484 million. However, out in front by quite some distance in first place is 2017’s It, which drew just over $700 million globally.
