The first Monday in May once again transformed the steps of The Metropolitan Museum of Art into the world’s most glamorous runway—but this year, it was history in the making. Met Gala 2025 unveiled a bold new chapter under the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” celebrating the rich, revolutionary legacy of Black fashion, elegance, and self-expression.
What made this year’s gala even more groundbreaking? For the first time ever, an all-male co-chair panel led the iconic event, symbolizing a powerful shift in the cultural and creative guardianship of fashion’s grandest night. Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton, celebrated actor and style icon Colman Domingo, musical trailblazers Pharrell Williams and A$AP Rocky, joined long-standing Met Gala architect Anna Wintour, with the legendary LeBron James stepping in as honorary chair.
Honoring “Black Dandylism”
This year’s exhibit and theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” curated by the Costume Institute, delves deep into the artistry, resistance, and refinement of Black dandylism—where fashion becomes not just personal style, but radical political expression.
From Harlem Renaissance legends to contemporary trailblazers redefining masculinity, the exhibition celebrates centuries of Black men and women who’ve used tailoring, textiles, and flair to defy stereotypes and shape culture. “Black Dandylism” is more than fashion; it’s a movement that turns a sharp lapel or a velvet loafer into a cultural statement.
A Night of Monumental Style
The Met Gala’s red carpet shimmered with visual storytelling, as attendees interpreted the theme with bespoke precision. Think: lush brocades, sculpted silhouettes, ornate embroidery, and regal suiting inspired by diasporic royalty, Southern gents, Caribbean panache, and Afrofuturist visions.
Lewis Hamilton stunned in a deconstructed Savile Row tuxedo lined with African Ankara prints, an ode to ancestral pride and elite craftsmanship. Colman Domingo wore a custom gold-embellished cape suit by LaQuan Smith that whispered Black excellence from every thread. Pharrell, never one to play by the rules, reimagined the cowboy aesthetic with rococo tailoring, rhinestone cowboy boots, and a silk bolo tie dipped in pearls.
And A$AP Rocky? The Harlem-born rapper continued to push fashion’s limits, arriving in an upcycled couture ensemble inspired by the Congo’s Sapeur culture—complete with a feathered beret, layered paisley prints, and diamond brooches.
LeBron James, typically seen courtside, embodied grace and grandeur in an emerald green velvet tuxedo designed by Fear of God’s Jerry Lorenzo, with subtle nods to African royalty.
Reframing Masculinity
The significance of an all-male panel co-chairing the Met Gala can’t be overstated. These men, from sports, music, and film, have redefined what it means to be stylish, expressive, and fearless—unapologetically celebrating Black heritage, individuality, and power. In a world where Black masculinity is often scrutinized and boxed in, this year’s gala offered a radical vision of freedom, elegance, and joy.
A Cultural Shift
“Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” marks a watershed moment where the global fashion elite acknowledges not just the aesthetic, but the impact and ingenuity of Black creatives. The exhibit is a love letter to those who’ve used fashion to reclaim space, reshape identity, and tell untold stories through silk, wool, and swagger.
As the night wound down, one thing became clear: the 2025 Met Gala wasn’t just a party—it was a powerful, poignant celebration of culture, legacy, and the future of fashion through a Black lens.
And in the words of Colman Domingo on the carpet, “Tonight, we wear history.”
