Screengrab from Mike Tyson’s Instagram page On Nov. 15, boxing legend Mike Tyson got into the ring for the very last time. Tyson, 58, took on 27-year-old YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. The fight was streamed on Netflix.
Tyson and Paul went all eight rounds, with Paul winning by unanimous decision. And while the world had much to say about the fight, Tyson says despite losing, he still won. “This is one of those situations when you lost but still won,” he wrote. “I’m grateful for last night. No regrets to get in ring one last time.” “I almost died in June,” Tyson continued, referencing the reason the original date of the fight was moved. On May 26, Tyson had an “ulcer flare-up” during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles, USA Today reported. “[I] had 8 blood transfusions. Lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won,” Tyson wrote. “To have my children see me stand toe to toe and finish 8 rounds with a talented fighter half my age in front of a packed Dallas Cowboy stadium is an experience that no man has the right to ask for. Thank you.” Tyson is a father of seven, including Mikey, Amir, Ramsey, Miguel, Milan and Morocco. His daughter Exodus died when she was 4 following a traumatic treadmill accident in 2009. Millions of people liked Tyson’s Instagram post and thousands left comments. “We’re all proud of you, Mike,” actor Chuck Norris wrote. “Once a warrior, always a warrior.” “FOR EVER AND ALWAYS THE RING SAVAGE,” another comment read. “You are the greatest of all time,” said another fan. Tyson has a final record of 50-7, and he’s recorded a total of 44 KOs. Paul, who is still early in his boxing career, now has a record of 11-1. Paul also shared a statement following the fight, simply writing, “W.” next to several photos of the two of them in the ring.
Tyson said on his social media that “this is one of those situations when you lost but still won. I’m grateful for last night.”
The fight almost didn’t happen after Tyson experienced an ulcer flare-up while on a plane in March. He addressed his illness Saturday, writing that he “almost died in June.” He said he had eight blood transfusions and “lost half my blood and 25lbs in hospital and had to fight to get healthy to fight so I won.”
Tyson retired from boxing in 2005 after a 20-year career. He last fought in a 2020 exhibition match against former four-division world champ Roy Jones Jr.
