Shawn Mendes’ Dolce & Gabbana suit called for menswear calm. His double-breasted jacket was boxy, and ’80s. With lapels on the large side, there was plenty of room for decoration, which came in the form of textured embroidery to amp up what is a deeply classic, deeply Italian suit. But with this belter, Mendes still followed the unspoken 2024 red carpet protocol, ditching the tie for some sexy chest-out action.
When you’re going old school like Mendes, you can have fun in the trouser department. Going baggy on the bottoms, his black pants were cut loose, flaring below the knee and generously breaking over his western-style boots, which stepped along with whole cowboy thing in New York at the moment (see Post Malone’s gas station glam on that same evening).
Mendes’ fit was on the quieter side of D&G suiting, given the Italian label’s maximalist vibe, but all the trademarks were there. For every bejewelled show off, there’s a pure, immaculate Sicilian black two-piece that skews classic.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise to see Shawn Mendes looking this good, given his history of mega menswear looks. There are off-duty gymwear wins, Met Gala Tommy Hilfiger moments, and the princes pearls – and yesterday’s VMA outfit was business as usual.
