Harry Belafonte (born March 1, 1927 – April 25, 2023) was an American singer, actor and activist, who popularized calypso music with international audiences in the 1950s.
Veteran actor and singer Harry Belafonte’ dies on Tuesday night left the entire world grieving. The singer, who introduced a Caribbean flair to mainstream US music, passed away due to congestive heart failure at his New York home. He was 96. Tributes have been pouring in for the singer-activist.
He served as one of the lead organizers of the USA for Africa “We Are The World” single, raising $100 million for famine relief in Ethiopia. Belafonte is also known for breaking Hollywood’
Harry Belafonte broke racial barriers in the 1950s as a musician and actor. He also was one of the last surviving performers of the Civil Rights Movement who put careers in jeopardy to march and protest.
