Anne Baxter Costuming & Makeup as Nefretiri For The Ten Commandments Movie

Edith Head – Costume –  The 10 Commandements – 1956 – Anne Baxter – Nefretiri

In Cecile B. Demille’s 1956 film, The Ten Commandments, Anne Baxter plays an Egyptian queen named Nefretiri, who is based on a real queen named Nefertari, who is not to be confused with Nefertiti, who was like the mother-in-law of King Tut.

Rameses II’s Queen was actually named Nefretiri. Nefertiti lived about 60 years earlier, and was the Queen of Amenhotep IV (named Akhenaten later in his reign). These events were depicted The Egyptian (1954). Nefretiri means “beautiful companion” in Egyptian.

At the heart of the exhibition is Queen Nefertari, who was renowned for her beauty and prominence. Called “the one for whom the sun shines,” Nefertari was the favorite wife of pharaoh Ramesses II.

Edith Head was one of the most prolific costume designers of the twentieth century and won a record eight Academy Awards for costume design in a career that saw her dress the casts of over 400 films.

Enjoying a life of ease in the court of Egypt’s pharaoh, Moses (Charlton Heston) discovers his Hebrew heritage and, later, God’s expectations of him. He dedicates himself to liberating his people from captivity and — with the aid of plagues and divine intervention — manages to lead them out of Egypt and across the Red Sea. A greater challenge comes in the form of the golden calf idol, however, and it takes an unforgettable visitation by God on Mount Sinai for Moses’ mission to prevail.
