Prince William and Kate Middleton
Buckingham Palace confirmed that the couple will attend the Wales vs. England Six Nations rugby match, where they will be rooting for opposing teams. In case you didn’t know, the Prince of Wales is patron of the Welsh Rugby Union, while the Princess of Wales took over as patron of England’s Rugby Football League and their Rugby Football Union in February 2022.
As noted by People, this isn’t the first time the couple have gone head to head. Last year, the royals saw their respective teams compete against one another and Princess Catherine ended up being victorious, with England defeating Wales at Twickenham Stadium, 23-19.
When the Princess of Wales took over as patron of England’s RFL and RFU, she claimed the position from Prince Harry. It was one of the first patronages to be passed on after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from their senior position as royals.
Princess Catherine expressed her excitement for the new role in an Instagram post (as seen above), where the royal donned an athletic ensemble fit for the pitch, and she wrote, “I am so thrilled to become Patron of the Rugby Football League and Rugby Football Union – two fantastic organisations who are committed to harnessing the power that sport can have in bringing communities together and helping individuals flourish.”
When the Prince and Princess of Wales watched their teams face off in 2022, they brought their eldest son, Prince George, 9. So, we’ll be keeping a lookout to see if the royals bring another surprise guest for the game this year.
Kate, 41, wore a white and red houndstooth coat by Catherine Walker, which she debuted on a 2018 visit to Stockholm. The striking piece, which features playful oversized red buttons and a flattering knee-length hemline, bears more than a passing resemblance to a chic Moschino suit worn by Diana, Princess of Wales, to the christening of Princess Eugenie in December 1990. Diana re-wore the statement ensemble — featuring a red and white blazer and contrasting black and white skirt — on a number of occasions, including on an official visit to Canada the following year.
