Brooklyn Museum honored visionary French fashion designer and Renaissance man Thierry Mugler with a well-deserved retrospective entitled Couturissime. Mugler who died earlier this year was one of the most innovative fashion designers of the last century. He was also one of the first major designers to include black and trans models in his runway shows.
The retrospective, (which opened Friday, November 18th), is located on the 5th floor of the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Gallery. The exhibition extends to a number of rooms showcasing an edgy aesthetic – bold, theatrical, flamboyant and defiant style. Mugler’s wearable art consisted of designs made from materials such as latex, vinyl, plexiglass, rubber, chrome and other embellishments.
The exhibition displayed Thierry Mugler’s masterful and creative collections which adorned the bodies of Madonna, Beyoncé, David Bowie, Grace Jones, Cardi B, Bella Hadid, Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian just to name a few.
There are his storybook sketches and costume designs from the stage production of ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ as well as a 4D installation of Macbeth by Artist Michel Lemieux. His time in the director’s chair for George Michael’s “Too Funky” music video as well as his successful fragrances including the highly influential and best selling Angel perfume first introduced in the early 90’s.
There is also a series of framed photographs from notable fashion photographers, David LaChapelle, Helmut Newton, Herb Ritts, Lillian Bassman, Guy Bourdin, Sarah Moon, Pierre et Giles, Ellen von Unwerth and Mugler himself of supermodels, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Pat Clevand, Iman, Jerry Hall and Christy Turlington wearing Mugler’s one of a kind designs on various fashion shoots and locations.
The Fashion Sizzle team thoroughly enjoyed and was impressed with the spectacular designs of Thierry Mugler. A designer, whose progressive fashion designs elevated and modernized the runway.
A must see for Fashionistas.
The exhibition will end its run Sunday, May 7th 2023.
